Short Hair, Don’t Care? The Truth About Shaving Your Dog

When the temps are climbing, it’s only natural to want to keep your pet cool!
For many pet parents, the first instinct is to say, “Let’s shave it all off!” But before you go for the buzz cut, let’s talk about why shaving your dog might not be the best move and what you should do instead.
Your Dog’s Coat Has a Job to Do
Dogs aren’t just wearing fur for fashion. Their coats are designed to regulate body temperature year-round. For double-coated breeds like Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds, their undercoat insulates them from both heat and cold. Shaving it off can actually make them hotter and more vulnerable to sunburn and skin issues.
Shaving Can Damage the Coat
In many breeds, shaving can lead to permanent coat damage. The hair may grow back patchy, coarse, or not at all. This is especially true for double coated dogs. Once that natural insulation is disrupted, it can take months (or longer) for the coat to recover,if it ever does.
What to Do Instead: Safe Summer Grooming
You can help your pup stay cool with the right grooming routine:
De-shedding treatments remove loose undercoat and allow better airflow to the skin.
Light trims help keep the coat tidy and manageable without stripping away natural protection.
Frequent brushing prevents matting, which can trap heat and moisture close to the skin.
Regular baths with a gentle shampoo keep the coat clean, helping your pet feel fresher in the heat.
Know the Breeds That Can Be Clipped Safely
Not all dogs are created equal when it comes to summer haircuts. Poodles, Shih Tzus, Maltese, and similar single-coated breeds can safely get a shorter clip, since their hair is more like ours and grows continuously.
If you’re unsure what’s safe for your pet, ask your groomer! We’re here to recommend the best summer grooming plan based on your pet’s breed, coat type, and lifestyle.
