From Summer to Fall: How Your Pet’s Grooming Needs Change

Fall in Arizona may not mean sweaters and chilly afternoons right away, but the change in season can still affect your pet’s coat, skin, and grooming needs.

As the intense summer heat begins to ease, it is a great time to take a closer look at your pet’s grooming routine.

A few simple changes can help keep your dog or cat comfortable, clean, and ready for the season ahead.

1. Keep Up With Seasonal Shedding

As the seasons change, many pets begin shedding their summer coat. You may notice more hair around the house or extra fur coming out during brushing.

Regular brushing and professional grooming can help remove loose hair before it becomes tangled or matted. For pets with thick or double coats, a professional deshedding service can be especially helpful.

2. Pay Attention to Dry Skin

Arizona’s dry climate can be tough on your pet’s skin throughout the year. As fall arrives, changes in temperature and humidity can make dryness, itching, and flaking more noticeable.

Regular grooming helps keep the coat clean while giving you and your groomer an opportunity to notice changes in the skin. Using gentle products designed specifically for pets can also help prevent unnecessary irritation.

3. Do Not Forget About Paw Care

After months of hot Arizona pavement, your pet’s paws may need a little extra attention.

Check paw pads regularly for dryness, cracks, irritation, or other changes. Keeping nails trimmed and excess hair around the paw pads maintained can also help keep your pet comfortable.

4. Stay Ahead of Mats and Tangles

As coats begin changing for the season, brushing becomes even more important. Longer coats can develop tangles quickly, especially around the ears, legs, belly, and tail.

Waiting too long between grooming appointments can allow small tangles to turn into uncomfortable mats. Maintaining a consistent schedule makes coat care easier for both you and your pet.

5. Keep Your Grooming Schedule Consistent

Cooler weather does not mean grooming should stop. Regular baths, brushing, nail trims, ear care, and coat maintenance are important throughout the year.

Keeping appointments consistent can also make grooming a familiar part of your pet’s routine instead of something that only happens when their coat becomes difficult to manage.
